Can Your Pool Experience Water Damage??
Did you know that your pool could experience water damage?
It’s true! If the mastic that protects your pool wall is old or cracks, water can seep in and can cause $$$$ in damage.
Water damaging a pool? It sounds crazy but we’ll explain…
Pool Water Damage
The concept of “pool water damage” sounds far fetched but the water damage doesn’t come from the “fun side” of the pool wall, the water where everyone’s swimming and having a great time.
The damage can occur on the other side of the pool wall – the dirt side. The dirt side plays a really important part in the overall well being of your pool.
If you magically were to lift your pool out of the ground (think above-ground pool) the walls of that in-ground pool probably wouldn’t be able to support the weight and pressure of the water in the pool. That’s where the dirt comes it – its job is to provide much needed support to the pool wall, giving them strength and structure to keep it in tact.
The Pool Expansion Joint
Looking at our diagram above you’ll see the gap between the coping & the pool deck. That is called the expansion joint.
The expansion joint’s job is to give the coping and the pool deck a little room should either one shift, expand or contract due to age or weather.
But – the expansion joint must be sealed to keep the elements out and the correct sealant is a pool mastic or caulking.
Caulking is a silicon material designed for its abilty to keep the elements (such as water) out but is ‘stretchy’ so it will move along with any shifting the coping or pool deck might experience.
Depending on the level of expertise of the caulking installer, pool caulking can last 5-10 years before it needs to be replaced.
How Can Water Damage A Pool?
A pool getting water damage is ironic but here’s how it happens:
If the caulking is old or cracked, water from snow, rain or… splashing can fill get into the expansion joint and seep into the dirt behind the pool wall.
A change in the composition of the dirt behind the pool wall could change its integrity, making it muddy, causing it to shift and affecting its ability to provide proper support to the pool wall.
Which could cause damage to the pool wall which could be very expensive to repair.
Replace Pool Caulking
Proper maintenance including replacing the pool caulking can avoid a situation like this.
